Server-Side Tracking for Shopify

Shopify removed checkout.liquid and Additional Scripts in 2024, so a Customer Events Web Pixel is now the only sanctioned way to track checkout and purchase. TrakSolv hosts a first-party server-side GTM container for your Shopify store and forwards clean, deduplicated conversions to GA4, Meta CAPI, Google Ads and TikTok. Live in minutes, flat monthly pricing.

Why it matters for Shopify

The pixel alone is leaking your data.

Browser-side tracking on Shopify loses a growing share of conversions. Here's what moving to a server-side setup fixes.

Recover checkouts lost to ITP & ad-blockers

On Shopify, the browser pixel is throttled by Safari/Firefox ITP, capped 7-day cookies, and blocked outright by ad-blockers and consent walls — and Shopify's own native pixels don't pass the hashed email, phone and address that platforms need to match. A server-side Web Pixel moves measurement off the browser, so purchases and add-to-carts the pixel silently drops are recovered and reported.

First-party data, served from your own domain

TrakSolv hosts your Google Tag Manager server container on a subdomain of your Shopify store. The Customer Events pixel relays every event server-side from a first-party context — it survives 3rd-party cookie deprecation, lasts far longer than client-side cookies, and is ad-blocker-proof because it never relies on a blockable browser request.

Deduplicated purchases to every ad platform

Every Shopify event carries a stable event_id (the order id on purchase), full user_data (email, phone, name, address) and the ad click-ids (_fbp, _fbc, gclid, _ttp…), so your server-side container forwards purchases to GA4, Meta CAPI, Google Ads Enhanced Conversions and TikTok — deduplicated against the in-browser pixel, with 10/10 match quality.

Step by step

How to set up server-side tracking on Shopify

Two pieces: a Customer Events custom pixel for checkout + purchase, and the TrakSolv Custom Loader in your theme for storefront pages. Both are paste-once and most merchants are live in a few minutes — no theme code edits and no app install.

  1. 1

Open Customer events in Shopify admin

Shopify admin → Settings → Customer events

Customer Events (the Web Pixel API) is the sanctioned replacement for checkout.liquid / Additional Scripts, which Shopify removed in August 2024. It works on Basic, Shopify, Advanced and Plus, and covers the checkout + thank-you pages that themes can't touch.

  2. 2

Add a custom pixel and paste the TrakSolv pixel code

Customer events → Add custom pixel → name it 'TrakSolv' → paste the code → Save

Generate your container's pixel code in the TrakSolv dashboard (Attribution setup → Shopify). It relays every Shopify analytics event server-side to your container, which fans purchases out to Meta CAPI / Google Ads / TikTok / GA4 automatically.

  3. 3

Set the pixel permission and connect

Customer events → your pixel → Permission: Not required · Data sale: does not qualify → Save → Connect

The pixel posts to your own sGTM endpoint, not a third party, so it does not require consent permission and the data it collects does not qualify as a data sale. Connecting activates it on your live storefront.

  4. 4

Add the Custom Loader to your theme for storefront pages

Online Store → Themes → Edit code → theme.liquid → paste the Loader snippet before </head>

The pixel handles checkout + purchase; the Custom Loader puts the first-party GTM library on your product, collection and cart pages. Grab the Head + Body Loader snippets from your TrakSolv dashboard. The two work together — loader = GTM library on-page, pixel = checkout tracking server-side.

  5. 5

Place a test order to verify

Buy a product → TrakSolv dashboard → Logs tab

Within ~5 seconds you should see a checkout_completed recovery event with the order value and the Meta / Google / TikTok / GA4 response statuses.

Your container's Shopify pixel code and the Loader Head + Body snippets are generated for you inside the TrakSolv dashboard. Create a free account to grab them, or see the full how-it-works walkthrough.

FAQ

Server-side tracking for Shopify, answered

Does server-side tracking work with Shopify?

Yes. TrakSolv uses a Customer Events custom pixel (the Web Pixel API) for checkout and purchase, plus the Custom Loader in theme.liquid for storefront pages. Both are paste-once in Shopify admin and conversions start flowing through your own first-party server-side GTM container.

Do I need checkout.liquid or the Additional Scripts box?

No — Shopify removed both in August 2024. A Customer Events custom pixel is now the only sanctioned way to track the Shopify checkout and thank-you pages, and it's exactly what TrakSolv uses. It works on Basic, Shopify, Advanced and Plus.

Will this double-count against Shopify's native Meta / Google integration?

No. Every event carries a stable event_id (the order id on purchase), so GA4, Meta CAPI, Google Ads and TikTok deduplicate the server-side event against the in-browser pixel and collapse to a single conversion — with higher match quality, not double counting.

How much does server-side tracking for Shopify cost?

TrakSolv uses flat monthly pricing — one event sent to many destinations still counts as one event, and paid plans never auto-pause at quota. You can start free and go live in minutes.
